Recent TEDx Talk

I recently gave a TEDx talk at TEDx Brisbane and I must say it was quite an eye-opening experience. It was a particular honour when I got the call, as you cannot apply to give a TED talk, you have to be invited.

What I did not know but should have guessed, is that all TED talks are closely ‘curated’. First, you receive a designated curator (mine was awesome – shout out to Jade Demnar!).

Second, your curator fact-checks every word of your talk or ensures that it is clear that it is your opinion as an expert in your field. It is actually quite freeing not to have to spend time giving your audience the science behind your assertions.

Third, they go through your talk with a fine tooth comb and ‘TEDify’ it, taking out all but the most pithy content. For example, you’re not even allowed to say ‘In conclusion’ – a total waste of time and words!

I must thank the Brisbane TEDx, especially the person the buck stops with, Juanita Wheeler, for running an incredibly professional operation.

The best part was mixing with the other incredibly switched on speakers.

Thanks again, Juanita, Jade and all the team of 20+ volunteers – sensational show.
